Name: Aranel Elensar
Age: 19
Race: Human
Gender: Female
Allegiance: Varden
Birthplace: Therinsford
Hometown: Aberon
Du Edoc'sil?: No
Hair//Eye//Skin color: Amber blonde hair that falls in soft curls to her mid-back// Slate blue eyes that have a way of giving the impression that they see through any guises people choose to wear// Relatively light skin since she doesn’t spend all of her time outside, but she does like to explore the woods surrounding Therinsford, so she does have some color.
Height: 5 foot, 4 inches
Weight: 130 pounds
Description: Common Clothing: Aranel tends to wear mostly blue, but she occasionally will wear greens, reds, and browns. With the colored long-sleeved tunic, she usually wears soft leather pants with high dark brown leather boots. On cold days she fastens a cloak around her that is either grey or dark brown.
Appearance: Aranel is short and slender which lend her speed and agility; she has also honed her reflexes to make the most of her agility. Even though she does not appear to be muscular, Aranel is very well toned with very little fat on her body. She has a good deal of strength, but she relies mostly on her speed to reinforce her attacks. Aranel has a slender face with rather high cheekbones, but they are not unusually sharp. Her amber colored hair frames her face in soft curls, bringing out the blue-gray in her eyes. Depending on the amount of light, and her mood, her eyes appear to be anywhere from deep gray to pale blue.
Personality/Attitude: Aranel is knowledgeable and sometimes over confident, but she is able to admit when she is wrong about something, and even though she is proud, she does not see it as a weakness to ask for help. Aranel is always willing to listen to people, and is almost always patient when asked to explain something. Aranel does not easily anger, but when she does get angry, it takes a long while for her to cool down. However, she usually does not stay mad at anyone for more than a day or so, and is almost always willing to forgive anyone for anything.
Aranel is driven by her emotions, but she has learned to keep them well-hidden, giving her an appearance of certainty. Her greatest weakness is that she cannot bear the sight of pain; she always tries to help anyone in need, whether they are friend or foe. As a storyteller, she tends to sometimes cross the boundary between reality and fantasy in her thought, but she is completely honest when she speaks. Also, she has learned to give credit to others and respect to those who need it. She is a storyteller who seeks adventure and wishes more than anything to be in one of the stories she tells.
Weapon of Choice: Aranel is most skilled with a thin, light, long sword, with the blade being just under three and a half feet. Although she has heard tale that it is of elven make, Aranel is almost certain that it is simply a human of extraordinarily fine make. She also carries a small dagger, and a pair of twin sai. She can use a bow, but not nearly as well as she could use a sword.
Magical Experience: None
Languages: Common.
Occupation: Storyteller
Literacy: Read and write very well.
Past History: Aranel’s mother died in childbirth, and her father, Michael, became sick just after Aranel turned six, and he died not long after. She has no siblings, though she does have an aunt, her mother’s sister, in Therinsford. Gareth, the storyteller of Therinsford, was friends with Aranel’s mother and father, as well as a brother-in-law. After Aranel’s father died, Gareth and his wife, Aranel’s aunt, Elena, took Aranel into there home. Aranel learned that her father had moved to Therinsford because he heard a rumor that a magnificent treasure was hidden there, and then he met the most enchanting woman he’d ever seen, and he decided to stay. Aranel’s father told only two people who he was. Aranel’s mother knew, and Gareth knew.
Gareth had been Therinsford's story-teller since his father passed away, but his father had been the story-teller for many years before him. As such, Gareth held much respect within the city. That, added to the appreciation a few of the townspeople had for Aranel's father, for all the help he had given them, lead to Aranel's training. When Aranel turned ten years old, she was taught how to use different weapons. The town carpenter had crafted a delicately crafted bow that was anything but. The town blacksmith shaped a pair of twin sai for her to use, and the town swordsmith made her an intricately patterned short sword. She began training and excelled in archery, and she became skilled with the twin sai. However, she was amazing with her swordplay, and she remained undefeated among the townspeople. When she was 12, she won a horse from a foolish traveler. The horse was black with a silver mane and tail, and a jagged stripe on each side, close to his back. Aranel named him Elenfea.
More than just fighting skills, she learned to be a story-teller. She would entertain the kids with legends she learned from Gareth. Aranel began noticing things about people, almost as though she could see their true personality. It was never particularly clear, but after observing various people, she found that she could determine who she should be friends with based on how they acted. She asked Gareth about it, but he said that he would tell her when she was older. When she turned eighteen, Gareth told her the secret her father had told him all those years ago. Aranel’s father had been a member of the Varden. He was working in secret gathering names of potential recruits. He would then meet with those people, and if he found that they were sincere in their wish, he would send them to meet someone who could take them to the Varden. Not once did Michael make a mistake. That fact earned him a great deal of respect among the Varden, for he was able to help their ranks grow without risk to the Varden.
After Gareth finished his story, Aranel asked if she would be able to go to the Varden. A week later, she departed from Therinsford on Elenfea heading south to Surda, and ultimately to Aberon. The journey was long, but she was able to keep her supplies stocked, so she did not need to stop too often. On nights when she was in a city, she would rent a room at an inn, but besides that she would set up camp a short distance from the road. She knew from speaking with various story-tellers that two Riders had revealed themselves, and that they had found Vrael’s sister. That was the latest anyone had heard when Aranel arrived in Surda.
Aranel went to the palace in Aberon and was granted an audience with Nasuada after Aranel had mentioned her father’s name, and after she had had her mind scanned. Nasuada spoke of her memories of Michael Elensar, even though she was young when she last saw him. Nasuada granted Aranel a place to stay in Aberon, and said that if Aranel needed anything, it would be provided for her.
Introduction: Aranel was in her room reading over a scroll of recent events that had happened since her departure from Therinsford. Iio and Syra must be the Riders I heard about… and it turns out that they found a shrine to Vrael, guarded by his sister, and they brought some artifacts back. Interesting…
As she continued reading, she heard a knock on her door. When she opened it, a messenger told her that Nasuada wished to see her immediately. Even though she was slightly puzzled, Aranel quickly made her way to Nasuada’s office. She knocked on the door, and received permission to enter.
“You wished to see me.” Aranel said as Nasuada looked up.
“Yes. I do not know if you have heard, but both Eragon and Galbatorix perished in a battle a couple days ago,” Nasuada paused a moment, awaiting Aranel’s response.
“I had heard tell of this, yes.”
“Have you also heard that the two Riders, Syra Ietha and Iio have disappeared?”
“I heard some mention of this, but it was not quite as well known… I also heard that a new leader had taken over for Galbatorix. Some say she is his daughter,” Aranel added, thinking I may as well let her know just what I know.
“It seems you are at the same place I am then. There shouldn’t be any immediate danger, but I was wondering if you could possibly keep your eyes and ears open for any information.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Aranel said with a bow. “I will let you know of anything that I hear.”
“Thank you, Aranel. You may go.”
Aranel gave another bow, then exited the room. “I wonder what she is expecting me to find…” Aranel thought as she made her way through the streets of Aberon.
Three days later, with the death of Nasuada, Aranel was officially chosen as the Varden's new leader. She had been busy trying to prepare for Syra and Iio, as she had just heard of their reappearance.
"I wonder just what they have found," Aranel mused out loud to no one in particular.
