Past History: Tijia was a fair baby with golden locks and rosy cheeks. She had blue eyes and a button nose and her parents loved her to death. They were great scholars her parents and treasures of the crown. They were highly respected advisers of the elven queen and so when they were granted a beautiful baby girl Du Weldenvarden celebrated.
Tijia grew to be a pretty child and a charmer. But she wasn’t unintelligent, as you might expect of a blonde beauty, but quite bright. Her parents, Ali and Romain, taught her well in the ways of history, mathematics, and literature but there were two things they couldn’t teach her. The two elves knew little of magic or warfare even though they were elves. They just didn't care for it and it made Ali and Romain love each other even more. So, twice a month Tijia rode to the palace to learn warfare from the weapons master and to learn from a private magic tutor in the city. And she was a good student, always attentive but she seemed slightly distant until her two special classes. Tijia learned the sword, the bow, and the pike from her teacher. She was alright at the sword and pike but her heart didn’t seem to be in it. Archery was where she really shined, she could hit the center every time standing and crouching and on horseback she almost always did. When it came to magic she was also quite good but when it came to war magic again, her heart wasn’t in it. What Tijia really loved was elemental magic, healing magic, and magic of the arts.
Her parents were quite pleased with her progress and pleased that she was interested in things of beauty. Tijia’s favorite topic though was the Dragon Riders. Both past Riders and current Riders fascinated her. Tijia loved the Riders so much she fantasized being one herself. She knew it wasn’t realistic but she hoped and dreamed that she could become one.
That dream faded as she grew older and moved into her own home. She began carving bows when she was 72 and got better and better as her trade excelled. She soon became one of the best in Kirtan. She made bows of yew, osage orange, and beech woods. Tijia carved beautiful patterns of fire, flowers, leaves, and anything else you could imagine into the wood and then weaved the bowstring and waxed it thoroughly.
She was extremely successful and it made her happy. When she was 117 she expanded her business and began to fletch arrows too. After her expansion she began to take on hands and her business grew. Now she only made special orders and inset the most intricate patterns.
Tijia was 158 and had nearly fifty hands when she took on a business partner. His name was Hershima Nagar and he was the best fletcher in the city. He had been her rival since the beginning until they both realized they could do better together. So she took him into a partnership and they became friends and competitors of skill. Every sixth week they would each take up their bow and sword and challenge each other in competitions of skill and power. Tijia usually won with skill but Hershima always seemed to be able to over power her.
Her life was going well when she first heard whispers of a Dragon Rider. He was supposedly with the Varden and the prospect thrilled her. So, she traveled to her parents old cottage south of the city to ask them about it. When she finally got around to asking about it they said it was true and that he would soon be traveling to Du Weldenvarden to train and that she should pay no heed to it and continue on with her life. So she took there word for it and kept her nose out.
Tijia heard of the Rider's training and of his leaving to go and fight and finally of his death but she tried to not think about what it meant for the elves or the Varden. She tried to keep herself busy in her work but she unknowingly became distant. Then she heard rumors of eggs in Surda, dragon eggs. Again she rushed off to see her parents and they confirmed this for her. But she noticed their looks of unease at her asking and asked them about it. Her father replied to her by saying,"Tijia your mother and I, we always knew that one day the infamous Dragon Riders would return. I think most people did, it was just a matter of when. Now, we always suspected your interest in them and knew that if they returned in our lifetimes you would probably seek that path. So your mother and I just want to give you something before you go to Surda."
Frankly, Tijia was speechless. She looked at her parents, at the people who had raised her and knew, everything she had ever done had led up to that moment so she said,"Father, mother I shall except your gift, set my affairs in order and leave this life tomorrow at precisely midday.
Introduction: Tijia looked down at the red sword in her hands,No not red but more of an orangey-red., she thought and looked at the bow soaking in a solution. She would be leaving in a few hours but was making herself a longbow for extra protection on her adventure. She yawned as she tucked a bit of mail into her her satchel. She glanced at the bow and saw it was ready for carving so she whet her carver and began to carve an intricate pattern of fire flowers into the handle.
Around five A.M. Hershima came bustling into the workshop talking about an order of steel arrows. She interrupted him to say,"Nagar, I'm giving you the business. I'm leaving Du Weldenvarden." He stared at Tijia, unbelieving and sputtered,"But, but, but, why?" She smiled at him and replied,"I'm going to become a Dragon Rider. He stared at her then smiled at her brightly,"Tijia my dear don't scare me like that, ever!" She scowled and said,"I'm not joking Nagar, I'm leaving. Just as soon as I inlay these gems I'm going to write you the business and leave for Surda." He looked at her sternly and then sighed,"Hurry up then, we open in two hours and I've got to get myself together." Tijia smiled at him as he rushed around straightening up. She picked up the small bits of obsidian and inlaid them into the flower centers. Then she took up a large ruby and slid it into the handle, sealing it in with magic. She wrote up a short piece leaving Hershima the business and instructing her workers to trust him as they always have. She signed the clean parchment and sealed it in hot wax. She rolled it into a scroll and handed it to him. "Goodbye friend, atra esterní ono thelduin. Mor'ranr lífa unin hjarta onr. Un du evarínya ono varda." He smiled and replied,"Atra gülai un ilian taught ono un atra ono waíse sköliro frá rauthr, Tijia Ali you'll need it. Go now, and don't turn back." He looked at her hard and bowed. She bowed back, took up her bow, and rode away on her pale horse, Tigerlily.
She rode hard and reached Silthrim at dusk. Her horse was breathing hard when she finally combed the foam from it's coat. It lapped greedily at the water and munched away at it's oats. Tijia smiled at Tigerlily and went to sleep in a clean bed.
At dawn she rode from the city, she wanted to make it down the Gaena river by sundown. They rode at a constant trot all morning. They stopped at the edge of Ardwen lake to rest and take lunch. They made it far down the Gaena before dark and the rest of their trip proceeded uneventfully as they edged the Beors and crossed the border into Surda. They rode through the village speckled Surdan grasslands and finally a week and a half after setting out they reached Aberon, capital of Surda and the Varden.
Ari rode through the gates with a group of traders and then turned off towards the castle. She walked Tigerlily through the temple district and finally joined a small throng of elves, dwarves, and humans at the gate. She noticed three guards staring intently at each person and then either turning them away or sending them in with a runner. Tijia dismounted and got in line. When it was her turn to be searched she let her mind walls down until the guard nodded. She smiled at him and then followed her runner to the stables. She quickly found a vacant stall ad tied her horse there. Tijia nodded at the runner and he lead her to the castle.
As they walked she quickly tied her hair back in a spare ribbon to keep it out of her face. The boy lead her through a series of passages before the reached a long hall. In the center there was a midnight blue egg. Each person in line had one minute with the egg until they were taken to the next. Her runner smiled up at her and said,"Your lucky miss, you came by when we wasn't so busy. The most of your folk come at dawn, s'like they're tryin' to prove a point." She laughed nervously but she was next so she tried to concentrate. When the man ahead of her failed to produce any results he was shunted off to the next egg. Tijia stepped forward and picked up the egg. But after a minute nothing had happened so her runner took her to the next room.
This time there were far less people in line. When she pointed this out to her runner he just smiled and said,"Most people give up after the first one, I've only seen one stick it to the end." Tijia laughed and looked at this egg it was bright red, just the color of her sword. She shivered at the likeness and picked up the egg, as it was her turn. This time though, immediately she heard a soft humming emanating from the egg and she almost dropped it. A guard felt the humming and reported it to what seemed to be the head guard. The head guard came over to her and said,"Let me take you to a more private room." He beckoned for her to follow him so she did, with the egg in her hands. He opened what seemed to be a small library and lead her in. When they were both inside he said,"And now we wait." So Ari just stood there staring at the egg feeling foolish for a few minutes. When nearly half an hour had passed she sat down and began to give up hope. After a minute though a line appeared on the egg. Another and another appeared until the egg was covered in little lines. Tijia placed the egg in front of her and just as she did it exploded into a million pieces. Tijia stared down at the baby dragon and nearly fainted from surprise but her runner prodded her in the back. She remembered the next step and reached out her hand to touch the dragon. The moment her fingers touched it's flank a shock ran through her but she didn't pull back she picked up her dragon and instantly received a wave of hunger. She looked at the bewildered guards as one stepped forward and said to her runner,"Take her to Aranel, she'll take care of her." The boy nodded and looked at Tijia,"Come on milady I've got to take you to Aranel" So she got up and followed him to the leader of the Varden.......
